Trending: Mixed Materials

The growing popularity of interior design and renovation shows in recent years has seen consumers gain creative confidence in a more “mix”, versus “match”, approach to styling.

Whether it be a stool, in place of a traditional bedside; or pairing a bench seat with dining chairs in the same setting, there is a greater acceptance of mixing things up.

In 2024, the use of mixed materials across interior design and furnishings is trending.

According to Brooke Tarr-Wilson, Crave Merchandise Coordinator, this mixed-materials trend is far more than a passing fad.

“Mixed-materials” continue to gain momentum across interiors,” she said.

“For a while now, we have witnessed a growing variety of material combinations in new home designs, with stone, timber, laminates, gloss, and matte finishes featured in combinations across vertical and horizontal surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms.

“This direction has now transferred into furnishings. You can see it across sofas and bedframes, with combination fabric and feature timber as well as across tables and occasional furnishings that combine timbers, stone, and metal. It is a look that creates great visual interest,” she said.

And the good news? We don’t have to rush out to buy new furniture or redo our kitchens to achieve this look.

According to Brooke, a cost-effective way to bring this style direction into our homes, is via a considered selection of accessories.

“We can create this look in our interior spaces by mixing up our accessories. Simply start with an item of furniture, for example, a timber table or dresser, then accessorise with mixed materials such as marble, metal, glass or ceramics,” she said.

If you are keen to bring this look into your home, without breaking the bank, why not follow Brooke’s advice, and start simply with your accessories?
